Overview
Inova Health System undertook a comprehensive, multi-phase modernization of the surgery department at its flagship Fairfax Medical Campus to resolve decades of incremental expansion and evolving clinical needs. The existing suite—spread across four building footprints—faced outdated layouts, inconsistent operating room geometries, and constrained circulation that no longer supported the demands of a high-volume academic medical center. The renovation standardized 38 operating rooms, introduced a new sterile core, improved security and flow with a dedicated perimeter corridor, and integrated advanced surgical technology and laminar airflow systems. Durable, cleanable, and adaptable finishes support long-term flexibility, while expanded storage keeps corridors clear. Carefully sequenced phasing allowed construction to proceed adjacent to live operating rooms without disrupting care.
