Acute care units that work for all

We design inpatient acute care environments that improve care delivery, support overburdened teams, and create calmer, more dignified experiences for patients and families. From ICU to med-surg, every detail reflects lean workflows, safety, and long-term performance.

Designing units that support care teams

Inpatient units succeed or fail on how well they support staff. Through lean planning, we shorten every step between team stations, supplies, and patient rooms—reducing fatigue, minimizing unnecessary movement, and improving response times. Thoughtful placement of meds rooms, supplies, and soiled workrooms, paired with on-stage/off-stage zoning, keeps operations efficient without exposing back-of-house activity to patients and families.

PATIENTS

Quiet, safe, and calming patient rooms

Patients consistently name noise, light, and lack of control as top stressors during a hospital stay. Our inpatient rooms prioritize a sense of calm and control: patients can adjust lighting and window shades themselves, access entertainment and education through in-room technology, and enjoy views of nature wherever possible.

Spaces that strengthen clinical performance

Decentralized charting alcoves provide direct lines of sight into rooms while reducing time spent away from patients. Durable, cleanable finishes, built-in wall protection, and integrated patient lifts further reduce injury risk and support long-term operational performance.

Future-ready inpatient environments

Inpatient care is evolving quickly, with shifting acuity levels, new technology, and changing patient expectations. We plan units and rooms to adapt over time, accommodating different acuity levels—from ICU and step-down to med-surg—within clear operational models. Our teams integrate digital tools such as smart beds, electronic whiteboards, and bedside tablets in ways that keep the room intuitive and uncluttered, supporting both clinical workflows and patient use.

Where care teams go to recover, refocus, and return to patients

Staff lounges, lactation rooms, and meditation spaces are intentionally located at the building’s perimeter to offer daylight and views, recognizing that resilient teams deliver safer, more compassionate care.
