Overview

From aging campus to agile care hub

The North Building expansion transforms Suburban Hospital’s aging campus into a cohesive, future-ready center for advanced care. Anchored by a new public lobby, the project establishes a clear and welcoming front door that simplifies arrival and strengthens the hospital’s connection to its neighborhood. The addition introduces all-private inpatient rooms, flexible acuity-adaptable beds, and a modern critical care unit designed to support emergency surges. A unified surgical platform brings operating rooms, procedure spaces, interventional labs, and sterile processing together on one level, significantly improving safety, efficiency, and clinical collaboration. Despite the tight residential surroundings, the design enhances campus circulation, introduces structured parking, and creates landscaped moments that reduce the institutional feel. The result is a thoughtfully organized, highly functional environment that elevates the patient journey and supports Suburban Hospital’s long-term mission.

Welcoming a clear, calm arrival

The new lobby creates a true front door for the campus, replacing decades of additions with a single, intuitive arrival experience. Clear sightlines guide patients from entry to information, waiting, and vertical circulation without confusion. Daylight, warm materials, and comfortable seating reduce stress and support dignity. Public dining and education spaces connect directly to the lobby, strengthening the hospital’s presence as a community resource.
