Designing for destinations of cancer care

We helped move cancer care from hidden, institutional spaces into welcoming destinations of care. By unifying what was once scattered across multiple buildings, we reduce travel, shorten the day, and make each visit easier to manage for patients and families who return again and again. From the parking approach to the front door and back home again, we plan every step of the journey so people spend less time navigating the system and more time focused on healing.

Patients

Giving patients more choice, control, and comfort

Cancer care is deeply personal, so our designs give patients and families real choices. We collaborate with health systems to form patient and family advisory committees, listening directly to people in treatment and survivorship about what works, what hurts, and what would help. Those insights shape everything from arrival and wayfinding to where loved ones can wait, rest, or work. Inside, flexible planning supports both social and private experiences—accommodating a quick infusion or an all-day stay, a quiet pod or a communal bay. We balance biophilic design and natural light with photo sensitivities and fatigue, giving patients control over lighting, views, and technology at the chair side. Designing for diversity in age, culture, acuity, and mood, we create spaces that respect how each person feels that day while supporting the full community of care around them.

Immersive pediatric treatment spaces

At LifeBridge Health’s Sinai Cancer Building, the pediatric infusion environment is designed to lift children out of the stress of treatment and into worlds that spark curiosity, comfort, and connection. These flexible treatment bays integrate immersive technologies that let young patients talk in real time with experts at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, connect with NASA scientists, or choose from interactive gaming experiences that give them control over their infusion journey. By blending play, learning, and choice, the space turns long appointments into manageable—and often memorable—experiences, supporting both healing and resilience for children and their families.

Pharmacy integration for streamlined care

Locating pharmacies within cancer centers fundamentally improves the patient experience by bringing medication preparation closer to the point of care. On-site sterile compounding and mixing reduce wait times, eliminate unnecessary travel between buildings, and create a smoother, more predictable treatment day—especially for patients who return multiple times a week. Integrated pharmacies also strengthen collaboration between pharmacists, nurses, and oncologists, enabling real-time adjustments to treatment plans and faster response when patients’ needs change.
