On May 10, 2023, Adventist HealthCare officially broke ground on the New Patient Tower at Shady Grove Medical Center—a significant milestone in the hospital’s ongoing mission to expand access to high-quality, patient-centered care. Designed in collaboration with Wilmot Sanz, the 150,000-square-foot addition will transform how care is delivered on campus, modernizing key service areas while enhancing the experience for patients, families, and caregivers alike.

A Modern, Right-Sized Hospital for a Growing Community

When complete in 2026, the New Patient Tower will redefine the Shady Grove campus with a design focused on adaptability, efficiency, and wellness. The expansion will right-size the Emergency Department, create modern Critical Care and Medical-Surgical units, and ensure that every inpatient room across the hospital is private—a major step forward for patient dignity, privacy, and infection control.

The new layout strategically repositions Critical Care, Observation, and Emergency Psychiatric Treatment Units, streamlining workflows and reducing travel distances for clinicians. This thoughtful reorganization supports faster response times, stronger team collaboration, and smoother transitions of care—ultimately improving outcomes for patients and satisfaction for staff.

Designing with Nature and Healing in Mind

The tower’s design embraces biophilic principles, weaving nature into the patient and staff experience at every level. A 20,000-square-foot green roof, planted with a mix of native species, will not only provide visual beauty but also play a vital role in stormwater management and sustainability performance.

Outdoor patios and a dedicated ICU Terrace will give families and caregivers meaningful places for respite, reflection, and connection to the outdoors—an essential element of the hospital’s healing environment. Inside, high-resolution nature imagery and artwork inspired by local landscapes will bring natural light, color, and movement into patient rooms, nurses’ stations, and staff lounges, promoting calm and rejuvenation in high-intensity care settings.

A Shared Vision and Collaborative Milestone

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together hospital leadership, physicians, nurses, the construction team, and the design partners who have shaped this vision from the start. For Wilmot Sanz, it was an opportunity to celebrate a shared commitment to advancing healthcare design and creating environments that elevate the human experience.

We are honored to support Adventist HealthCare as they continue to invest in the well-being of the community—and we look forward to seeing the New Patient Tower rise, open its doors, and begin a new chapter of care at Shady Grove Medical Center.
