Construction is well underway on the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, a transformative new healthcare campus designed to bring world-class medical care closer to home for the residents of Prince George’s County and Southern Maryland. At 600,000 square feet, this state-of-the-art facility represents one of the most significant healthcare investments in the region’s history.

A New Landmark for Healthcare Access and Community Vitality

Strategically located in Largo, Maryland, the new hospital is situated adjacent to the Largo Town Center Metro Station, offering convenient transit access for patients, staff, and visitors. Across the street, plans for a new mixed-use development—complete with retail, residential, and community spaces—will further support the area’s evolution into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly urban center anchored by healthcare innovation.

Once complete, the medical center will serve as a regional hub for high-acuity care, offering expanded services in emergency medicine, surgery, intensive care, women’s health, cardiology, and more—all within a healing environment designed to promote dignity, wellness, and patient-centered outcomes.

Transforming Care Through Thoughtful Design

As healthcare delivery continues to evolve, the Capital Region Medical Center is being built with adaptability, resilience, and innovation in mind. Key design goals include:

  • All-private patient rooms to enhance comfort, privacy, and infection control
  • State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment spaces, including advanced imaging, surgical suites, and interventional procedure rooms
  • Flexible clinical environments that can be reconfigured as care models shift
  • A healing-focused design approach that incorporates natural light, intuitive wayfinding, and calming interior materials

The hospital is being developed as part of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) and will replace the aging Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly. This move not only reflects a commitment to providing modernized infrastructure, but also aligns with broader regional goals to improve health equity and access for historically underserved populations.

See the Progress Firsthand

The construction team has made significant strides on-site, and the building is quickly taking shape. From the steel framing to the installation of key mechanical systems, each milestone brings the project closer to opening its doors to the community.
