New University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center Moves Forward in Largo, MD

The Wilmot Sanz and Grimm + Parker Architects design team is proud to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the new University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, a transformative project years in the making. Located in Largo, Maryland, this new facility represents a once-in-a-generation investment in public health, regional infrastructure, and community development.

More than just a replacement for the aging University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, the new medical campus will serve as a state-of-the-art regional hub for advanced, accessible, and equitable care for the residents of Prince George’s County and southern Maryland.

A Vision Realized Through Collaboration

The groundbreaking ceremony marked a major milestone in a project that reflects the dedication and leadership of community advocates, healthcare professionals, civic leaders, and planners, all united by a shared vision: to provide world-class healthcare services in a modern facility that reflects the dignity and needs of the community it serves.

This collective effort is a testament to the long-term planning and investment that has gone into elevating healthcare in Prince George’s County, ensuring that residents no longer have to leave the region to access the level of care they deserve.

A Regional Anchor for Care and Community Growth

The new medical campus includes:

  • A 600,000 square-foot full-service acute care hospital, equipped with the latest in medical technology, private patient rooms, and high-acuity clinical spaces to support emergency, surgical, and intensive care services
  • A new ambulatory care center that will support outpatient services, preventive care, specialty clinics, and community wellness programs
  • A strategic location adjacent to a Metro station, ensuring transit-oriented accessibility for patients, visitors, and staff
  • Integration into a larger mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly development, setting the stage for a vibrant urban district that combines healthcare, housing, retail, and community space

This new facility is envisioned not only as a center of medical excellence, but as a catalyst for economic revitalization and community transformation. By embedding healthcare within the larger context of a connected, walkable urban environment, the project promotes a holistic approach to well-being—addressing both medical and social determinants of health.

Designing for the Future of Health

As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, the design of the Capital Region Medical Center reflects forward-thinking priorities: flexibility for future growth, resilient infrastructure, and an environment that promotes healing through natural light, patient-centered layouts, and calming materials.

From planning and programming through design and documentation, the Wilmot Sanz and Grimm + Parker team worked closely with the University of Maryland Medical System and the Capital Region Health leadership to ensure that the facility would not only meet today's clinical needs, but remain adaptable for the healthcare innovations of tomorrow.

A Milestone for Prince George’s County—and a Moment of Pride for Our Team

This groundbreaking signals the beginning of a new era in healthcare for the region. Wilmot Sanz is honored to be part of this monumental effort, and we look forward to continuing our work with all project partners as construction progresses.

Together, we are helping to shape a healthier, more connected, and more equitable future for the communities of Prince George’s County and beyond.
