Designing for Precision, Comfort, and Care

In today’s rapidly advancing healthcare landscape, the design of clinical environments must do more than simply meet technical requirements—it must elevate the patient experience while empowering caregivers to deliver the highest standard of care.

Wilmot Sanz, in collaboration with Inova Health System and HITT Contracting, recently completed a comprehensive floor fit-out of the Professional Services Building, introducing a new GI Endoscopy, Apheresis, and Bronchoscopy Suite that exemplifies innovation, efficiency, and compassion in healthcare design.

This state-of-the-art facility includes two bronchoscopy imaging suites, six endoscopy procedure rooms, and a fully equipped scope processing clean room, all configured to support the specialized needs of both patients and staff. Designed for precision and flexibility, the space integrates advanced technology with human-centered design to set a new benchmark for outpatient care.

A Thoughtful Approach to Clinical Excellence

With capacity to accommodate 27 patients concurrently, the new suite is designed for optimized workflow and a streamlined patient journey—from pre-procedure through recovery. Within this carefully planned environment, seven isolation bays and four dedicated pediatric bays ensure care is tailored to each patient’s needs.

The pediatric bays feature patient-controlled lighting and integrated video systems, allowing children to engage with the space in a way that reduces anxiety and fosters a sense of control. These design elements, subtle yet powerful, transform what can be an intimidating clinical experience into one that is calm, supportive, and healing.

“Our goal was to design a space that brings comfort and reassurance to patients, while equipping staff with everything they need to deliver exceptional care efficiently,” says a member of the Wilmot Sanz design team. “That balance between emotional well-being and operational precision guided every design decision.”

Infection Control and Clinical Workflow

At the heart of the suite is a sterile scope processing room, meticulously planned to uphold the highest standards of safety and infection control. Here, every step of the cleaning and reprocessing sequence has been optimized to minimize cross-contamination risks and maximize efficiency. The result is a space that not only meets but exceeds regulatory expectations—reinforcing trust among both patients and providers.

Throughout the suite, team stations, corridor layouts, and support spaces were strategically configured to promote visibility and collaboration, reducing travel distances for staff and improving response times. The design encourages a natural rhythm of movement, helping clinicians work efficiently and stay connected across the care environment.

Design That Works—For People

From the earliest stages of planning, the Wilmot Sanz team worked closely with Inova stakeholders to understand every operational nuance of the departments involved. This insight informed a series of design solutions aimed at improving patient throughput, enhancing cleanability, and supporting a more seamless care experience.

By integrating cutting-edge technology with intuitive spatial design, the new GI Endoscopy, Apheresis, and Bronchoscopy Suite reflects Wilmot Sanz’s commitment to creating environments that advance care and uplift the human experience. Every detail—every material, every layout decision—was made with purpose: to ensure that patients, families, and clinicians alike feel supported, safe, and confident from start to finish.
