For the second consecutive year, Wilmot Sanz is proud to see our talented team of healthcare design professionals recognized on a national stage. We’re thrilled to share that Andrew Bowers, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, cLSGB, has been named a 2020 Rising Star by Healthcare Design magazine—one of the industry’s most prestigious honors for emerging leaders.

This annual recognition program celebrates up-and-coming professionals with less than 10 years of professional working experience who are making significant contributions to the field of healthcare design through innovation, leadership, and passion. As a 2020 Rising Star, Andrew joins a select group of peers who are helping to shape the future of the healthcare-built environment.

“I’m deeply honored to be recognized among such a dedicated and inspiring group of professionals,” Andrew shared. “Healthcare architecture gives us a rare opportunity to design with empathy and impact—each project can be a catalyst for healing and hope.”

A Career Built on Purpose and Technical Excellence

Andrew joined Wilmot Sanz in 2011 following his graduation from the Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design, where he developed a strong foundation in both creative problem-solving and technical rigor. Since then, he has emerged as a trusted design leader within the firm—particularly on complex renovation and expansion projects for prominent academic medical centers and community hospitals across the country.

From phased construction within fully occupied clinical environments to reimagining aging infrastructure for modern care delivery, Andrew’s portfolio reflects a unique ability to balance technical complexity with a human-centered approach to design. He excels at managing multi-stakeholder input, integrating Lean workflows, and navigating challenging regulatory environments—always with an eye toward outcomes that serve patients, families, and caregivers.

Leading the Way in Behavioral Health Design

Beyond his project work, Andrew also leads Wilmot Sanz’s Behavioral Health Design Studio, an internal initiative focused on advancing design solutions that support the mental and emotional well-being of patients across the care continuum.

Drawing on both professional insights and personal experiences, Andrew has become a vocal advocate for reducing stigma in mental healthcare environments. His work prioritizes safety, dignity, flexibility, and access—creating spaces that empower recovery while addressing the unique needs of vulnerable populations. Whether designing inpatient psychiatric units, crisis stabilization centers, or integrated behavioral health clinics, Andrew approaches each project with deep empathy and a commitment to transformative, trauma-informed design.

A Rising Star with a Vision for the Future

Andrew’s recognition by Healthcare Design magazine reflects not only his professional accomplishments but also his forward-thinking perspective on the evolving role of healthcare architects. He is passionate about mentorship, equity, and using design as a tool to drive systemic change within healthcare delivery.

At Wilmot Sanz, we’re proud to work alongside Andrew and to witness the profound impact of his leadership every day. His Rising Star recognition underscores the strength of our next generation of design leaders—those who are committed not only to design excellence, but to designing with purpose.
