Q&A with Rob Sanz

What does this promotion mean to you?

R: I’m incredibly excited to become a Partner and have the opportunity to further infuse my core values and personality into the culture of the firm. I look forward to diving deeper into how we approach challenges—whether design or operations—and helping craft the best possible outcomes for our clients and teams.

Having spent my entire career here, I’ve seen our evolution—from our founders’ pioneering spirit to the fresh perspectives of new leadership. Each generation has added its own layer of insight and innovation. My goal is to carry forward the best parts of each era and weave them together with my own unique outlook.

Where does your passion for healthcare design come from?

R: Early in my career, I spent a lot of time onsite as a project architect—often eating in hospital cafeterias. One day, I noticed a woman nearby making a difficult call, sharing heartbreaking news about a loved one who had spent the night in the hospital. That moment has stayed with me.

Healthcare environments are where people experience some of life’s most vulnerable and transformative moments. That realization has shaped my purpose as a designer. I want every space we create—whether for patients, staff, or families—to reflect empathy, mindfulness, and healing. When we truly understand how people move, feel, and interact within these spaces, we can design environments that improve lives in meaningful ways.

Where do you see the firm in five years?

R: We’re already recognized as one of the strongest healthcare design firms in the region, and I want to see us build on that foundation—deepening our local impact while expanding into new markets across the country. Our work has always spoken for itself, and I’m excited to grow our presence and reputation nationally.

What does it mean to be a Sanz at Wilmot Sanz?

R: It means everything. This firm is part of my family’s legacy—my father, Rolando Sanz, helped shape what Wilmot Sanz is today. He taught me everything I know about architecture, and even more about life. To follow in his footsteps and help lead the firm into its next chapter is both humbling and energizing. I take tremendous pride in carrying that legacy forward while continuing to evolve what it means to be Wilmot Sanz.
