Wilmot Sanz, in collaboration with U+ Design Partners, is thrilled to announce that our team has been awarded first place in an international design competition for the Jiangsu Province Hospital Pukou Branch—a transformative new healthcare facility planned for Nanjing, China.

This bold, forward-looking project will include approximately 1.7 million square feet of healthcare space, encompassing a 1,080-bed acute care hospital and a state-of-the-art outpatient care center. The new medical campus will serve as a major expansion of Jiangsu Province Hospital, designed to meet the region’s growing demand for accessible, high-quality healthcare while setting a new benchmark for patient-centered care and architectural excellence.

To bring this vision to life, the Wilmot Sanz and U+ Design Partners team embarked on an intensive, month-long design charrette—a rigorous and highly collaborative effort that brought together planners, architects, clinicians, and strategists across time zones and cultures. Together, we immersed ourselves in the program brief, carefully studying the operational goals and regional healthcare context to develop an elegant and efficient design concept.

Our goal was to not only meet the functional demands of a modern tertiary hospital but to create an architectural solution that would inspire healing, support staff well-being, and reinforce the hospital’s position as a premier provider in eastern China.

The winning concept reflects a commitment to:

  • Operational Efficiency: Intuitive circulation patterns, stacked diagnostic and treatment zones, and centralized clinical support to streamline care delivery
  • Patient-Centered Experience: Clearly defined arrival points, abundant daylight, access to nature, and thoughtfully programmed public spaces that reduce stress and foster comfort
  • Scalable Design: Modular planning principles that accommodate future expansion and evolving care models
  • Cultural and Environmental Sensitivity: A design language that draws from the local context while integrating global healthcare best practices

This project marks a significant milestone in Wilmot Sanz’s continued expansion into international healthcare design, reaffirming our ability to deliver sophisticated, culturally responsive, and technically complex medical environments across the globe.
